I went to my grandfather’s funeral today, and learned there for the first time what he did in the Navy in world war two, and a little bit about why, his whole life, he was always the first to volunteer to do anything and everything.
Apparently, everyone in the military knows that you never, ever volunteer for anything. Everyone except my grandfather, who very early on volunteered for a “secret mission”.
This secret mission turned out to be lifeguard duty in Waikiki for a Navy officers’ club. By volunteering for some unknown assignment, he spent world war two on a resort beach in Hawaii.
