A Real Country Song

by my dad David.

       Attempted Country (David Drucker)

  G                    C
I wanted to write me a real country song
     G                            D7
The kind that would make the gals swoon
      G          B            C          Am
With pedal steel wailing, and two banjos frailing
     D7                         G
All played under Neil's harvest moon

So I bought some old records and studied the words
In the songs of the great Opry stars
I pondered the issues, like "darling I miss you"
And fist fights in honkey-tonk bars

        Em                                  C
But my truck it starts up each time I turn the key
          Em                        C
And my truck is a car, how 'bout that!
               Em                          C
And my hound dog ain't dead, and he didn't run off
              A                        D7
Did I mention, my hound dog's a cat?

So how can I write me a real country song
My life isn't country by far
I grew up riding subways, do the crossword most Sundays
Heaven knows how I learned the guitar!

And my job is just fine, got no nine-to-five blues
'Cause I work for myself, in my home
Plus my wife is no cheater, she couldn't be sweeter
And my exes all leave me alone

  G                    C
I wanted to write me a real country song
     G                            D7
The kind that would make the gals swoon
      G          B            C          Am
With pedal steel wailing, and two banjos frailing
     D7                         E7
All played under Neil's harvest moon

     D7                         G
All played under Neil's harvest moon
